Apparently most of the country is back in school, so these treats might be a titch late.
However, we’re still soaking up the hot summer rays here in MN. Ha.
These would be a neat teacher appreciation gift, too.
I cannot say who originally created this idea, but I found two versions. Check out Dollhouse Bake Shoppe and Hungry Happenings for their chalkboards!
Chocolate Chalkboards
Author: Miss CandiQuik
Ingredients
- 1 package Chocolate CandiQuik
- Toothpicks
- Powdered Sugar
- Thin breadsticks or pretzel sticks
- Optional: almonds or peanuts
Instructions
- Melt Chocolate CandiQuik according to the package directions.
- Smooth the entire tray of coating onto a large flat surface covered with parchment paper. Parchment paper. Not wax paper. Wax paper will leave white stuff (aka wax) on the bottom of the block of chocolate.
- Here you can (and should) sprinkle almonds or salted peanuts for a little crunch and bark-type treat! (this is the back of the chalkboard, so it won’t be seen)
- cut the chocolate into rectangles. Mine were about 5 x 2.5″
- Use a toothpick to etch on your designs. Make sure you are etching on the flat side of the coating. Smooth powdered sugar over the bar.
- Using a toothpick, apply a little coating to the edge of the bar and press the bread sticks or pretzel sticks on.
- Clean up the chalkboards with a barely damp paper towel.

They turned out amazing, Sarah! Thank you so much for linking to my post, I am so glad you enjoyed my tutorial! Beth uses the melted chocolate to create the chalkboard (I use store bought chocolate bars) and I created the toothpick engraving (Beth created a really fun edible white chocolate “chalk” for writing)… so this is a really great combination of the two ideas. Love it!
I will be sure to feature your photo at the bottom of my post and on the Dollhouse Bake Shoppe fan photo album with links back to your post!
Hi Lindsay Ann,
Absolutely…I loved the idea of using the toothpick to etch on the chocolate, genius! Thanks for adding a link in your post.
OH. MY. GAWDDDDDD. This is GENIUS! SO so cute, Sarah. I love this idea!!
Thanks, Hayley! Now I just need someone to make them for. Sounds like Dorothy could use some, haha. I about died from the cuteness when I found the originals on Dollhouse’s (then Hungry Happenings) blog, so adorable.
I love these! I totally almost made them for the teachers, but realized I’d be making 70. I decided I was nuts to try and moved on.
Haha, yea that would be a project for sure…you would need an assistant, or two.
Those are so cute!!! love the powdered sugar trick for the chalk lines:-)
Love them!! Perfect for back to school and yummy, too!
I’m so happy you found inspiration from my Chocolate Chalkboards as well as Lindsay’s and appreciate the link! Your treats turned out great and I love that you used bread sticks for the frame. At first I thought they were pretzels and agree with you that those would work great too. I also love the suggestion of adding some nuts or something to add a nice crunch to the back of the bars.
Thanks for stopping by, Beth!
These are adorable! I love the etching technique. I’m also curious to see how Beth made white chocolate chalk. Thanks for sharing on Whatcha Whipped up!
Hi Dawn,
Thank you for saying hi. Beth’s chalk idea was awesome!
